Choosing Wisely at the VA

Choosing Wisely is a collective effort of professional societies whose goal is to reduce medical tests and treatments that are harmful or of marginal value. The Veterans Health Administration (VHA) has embraced this initiative, establishing a Choosing Wisely Task Force. The ultimate goal of this effort is to foster evidence-based, patient-centered, critical clinical thinking and shared informed decisions between VHA healthcare teams, clinicians and Veterans

As its first area of focus, the VHA Choosing Wisely Task Force chose to target glycemic overtreatment with an emphasis upon hypoglycemic safety. This focus led to establishment of the VHA “Hypoglycemia Safety Initiative” (HSI) and the development of a toolkit designed to foster shared decisionmaking between clinicians and Veterans.

The Office of Quality, Safety and Value was asked to host this toolkit, and will be working to post new materials as they become available.
